With the introduction of Electric toothpaste in the market of dental products, the meaning of brushing one’s teeth changed drastically overnight. No longer was toothbrush considered an object with a handle for grip and a head with bristles, used for cleaning the teeth. The Oral-B electric toothbrush was marketed with the promises of cleaning the inaccessible areas of oral cavity, with better efficiency at both cleaning and plaque removal. Priced much higher than the manual brushes, they took longer to register their impact in customer’s mind and their sales rose only slowly initially but steadily till they became a craze. Using electric power supplied by an internal battery, the heads of electric toothbrushes oscillate thus performing cleansing action. Earlier the battery provided in the electric toothbrush was non-rechargeable, rendering the brush to get slower as the battery discharged, often to the irritation of the user. Now the technology has driven to the placement of a rechargeable battery inside the electric toothbrush so that once used up, it can be charged for the next round of brushing by attaching it to a power source.

The electric toothbrush can be of two types based on their actions. They can be either vibration based or rotation-oscillation action based. Whereas the vibration action is said to be similar to manual brushing technique, in toothbrush with rotation-oscillation mode of action it is strongly recommended that the brush head be moved slowly from one tooth to next.

The Oral-B electric toothbrush can be either power toothbrush or rechargeable electric toothbrush, depending on their power source. Though the Oral-B power toothbrush is often considered to be the same as Oral-B electric toothbrush, there exists a fundamental difference between the two. Whereas power toothbrush mainly uses an AA battery making it much simpler, electric toothbrush is plugged into a power source to recharge. And as stated above, they fare better in terms of convenience and there are no chances of the battery discharging thus causing impediments while brushing in terms of either slowing down or stopping working. The Oral-B power toothbrush is more similar to the regular toothbrush and it is just the inclusion of a vibration action to perform the cleansing action more efficiently that happens to be the only difference with the regular manual toothbrush. Compared to these two toothbrush types, Oral-B electric toothbrush is more complicated and uses either oscillation-rotation technology (popularly termed as 3D-rotation technology) or sonic technology. Another feature that was not there in older electric toothbrush but comes in the newer generations of Oral-B electric toothbrush is a timer facility. An inbuilt timer rings after 2 minutes to indicate the minimum time for brushing required for an effective cleaning process.
